States of Emergence - Michele Mathison

August 03, 2017

Michele Mathison’s latest solo exhibition at Whatiftheworld gallery in Johannesburg has been one of our highlights this month. As the names of the sculptural works suggests; Extrusion, Intrusion, Distension, Volition, Parallax and Arterial, the exhibition is a powerful material investigation. Large shards of stone are punctured with steel strips creating a visual dialogue between materials. Bent steel pieces are layered and bent into harmonious circular shapes that conveys movement. Just like materials are extracted from the earth and re-interpreted into a cultural context, similarly people also move from one context to another across borders. Materials and movement comment on the nature of the current South African/African diaspora.

“Mathison’s stone sculptures are a symbolic gesture in which he gives back to the earth that which has been taken away”.

States of Emergence will run until the 19th of August at Whatiftheworld Gallery in Johannesburg. An exhibition not to be missed.
